by Jean-Michel David

'[...] the legend points to a local dweller in Jerusalem at the time of Christ’s crucifixion. According to what is probably to most common tale, as Christ was passing by bearing the cross on his way to Golgotha, a local leather-smith ‘taunted’ Jesus urging him not to dawdle [...]'

Michael DummettSir Michael Dummett - R.I.P.

Michael Dummett died on the 27th of December at the age of 86. In addition to being one of the most successful philosophers of the 20th century, his contributions to tarot are certainly amongst the most important. Amongst these are three co-authored absolute classics: The Game of Tarot (1980); A Wicked Pack of Cards: The Origins of the Occult Tarot (1996); and History of the Occult Tarot: 1870-1970 (2002).

More details are available on Michael Dummett's page on Tarotpedia and on Michael Hurst's pre-gebelin.blogspot.com.

Depending on what I receive over the coming weeks, the February issue of the Newsletter will contain an In Memorium. If you would like to contribute, please send your contribution to jmd@tarotstudies.org. There is also a discussion on the tarot history forum).

John Brahms TrinickNew tarot book

As mentioned (and in part shown) in Michael Dummett's History of the Occult Tarot, Waite also worked with John Trinick on another set of images now available in Abiding in the Sanctuary: The Waite-Trinick Tarot A Christian Mystical Tarot (1917-1923).

John Trinick was born Melbourne in 1890 and, after serving WWI, moved to the UK where he eventually died in Lancashire in England in 1974. He has been described as a talented stained-glass artist and ecclesiastical craftsman who worked extensively in that medium from the 1920s through to the early 1960s. He originally trained at the National Gallery School in Melbourne. His commissions included studies of ancient stained glass in France and Germany (1928-1838) (works now held by the Victoria and Albert Museum, London), windows for Ursuline Convent (London), St. Michael's, Stockwell (London), St Pauls (Dover), and Salmerston Grange (Margate) amongst others.
