About the Association for Tarot Studies.

The Association for Tarot Studies was incorporated in October 2003. Its object, or purpose, as mentioned in its Constitution, is to:

stimulate, promote and foster tarot studies;
further and encourage research in the history, connections and uses of the tarot;
encourage integrity and recognise each member's rights and responsibility in their particular use of tarot; and
represent the agreed interests of the members.

Full Membership to the Association is available to individuals who agree with and support the Association’s objects or purpose as stated above.

Organisations and individuals may request Associate Membership by contacting the ATS Secretary stating their support for the objects of the Association as stated above, and the reasons for wishing to become an Associate member. Associate membership will be considered by the Committee of the Association and fees, if any, set as appropriate.

Why membership?

The Association connects those of us who share an interest in tarot studies and who value the work undertaken by the Association.

Membership supports the activities of the Association, whether in its publications, websites, events, the International Tarot Award, and any other activities decided. Membership provides the resources – both material and personal – that ensures that the Association continues its activities according to its stated purposes (mentioned above).

Members also obtain discounts to certain items with various retailers and, in some cases, directly through the ATS; Any member may also request to be listed in the membership page with a link to her or his own site and, if requested, a page within this website (see, for example, jmd's page);

...and of course, membership provides support for any other venture decided by the Association – such as Tarotpedia, Conferences and other events.

Most activities of the ATS are freely available to members and non-members alike (such as the monthly Newsletter).

Membership allows you to be directly involved with further developments and is an explicit support for the Association's offerings to the broader tarot community. Your support sustains this ongoing work.

How do I become a member?

For full membership, your application request needs to be sent to the ATS Secretary, accompanied with details of your membership payment*. Request for membership or/and payment thereof implies that you acknowledge having read and agree with the objects of the Association as stated above.

* Payment may be made via PayPal with MasterCard or Visa using the buttons below. Electronic bank transfers, cheques and Money Orders are also possible within Australia, and cash payments may only be made in person to either the Treasurer or Secretary (no cash through the mail, please).

What are the costs of membership?

Membership fees have been reduced since 2009 in recognition that many may be experiencing increased financial burdens (this was ratified at the 2009 AGM). Concession fees are also available to those on welfare payments and low-income full-time students (though not universal, this is a common practice in various parts of Europe and in Australia, which we extend to our membership worldwide). Payments made after July are half the annual fees:

For six full years from January 2003 until December 2008, the monthly Tarot Café remained the a regular meeting and presentation event under the auspices (from October 2003) of the Association, and included the 2005 International Tarot Conference.

As of 2009, the Association has replaced Tarot Café with two annual events: the January Congress, incorporating the Association's AGM; and an annual July Convention.

Congress:
The Congress incorporates the formal AGM and election of officers when appropriate. Apart from the required reports and minuted items which form part of the AGM, the primary focus of the Congress is to review the world of tarot as it stands and ask: what is presently needed, and how can we encourage such to be undertaken?

Convention:
This is really a mini-Conference held over a weekend, with the location to be determined from year to year. For details and page links, please refer to the Convention page.
