Welcome

Welcome to the Association for Tarot Studies, an international tarot society that has a small but vibrant membership from various parts of the world. The ATS encourages, and is joined by those who have a keen interest in tarot studies and research in its various forms. Members who have actively requested such have a link in the members' area.

The ATS also recognises each member's right and responsibility in using tarot in their own individual manner. Our website aims to be of benefit to both member and non-member alike in ongoing tarot studies.

We hope you find our website helpful, and welcome your support in furthering the aims of the Association.

About the ATS

The Association for Tarot Studies began as a small group of individuals with varied and eclectic interests in tarot. As organisation of the 2005 Melbourne International Tarot Conference began to take shape in 2002, a new body also became incorporated as an Association in the State of Victoria, Australia. Membership has since grown to include individuals from various parts of the world. For further information about the Association for Tarot Studies, please refer to our membership page.

News

Lo Scarabeo 20 years
from the cover of Lo Scarabeo's Twenty Years of Tarot.

May 2008

Of blogs and things

Seems like there’s been some flourish of late in the development of blogs, websites, and various other undertakings. I cannot, of course, omit to specifically mention Robert Mealing’s own re-development of his tarothistory.com site into a blog format, nor the new forum thereon started. The impression I am getting from the world of tarot is that the various blossomings from various endeavours have released various seedlings on new soils, and we can each await to see which take solid root, which continue to solidify, and which whither, adapting to their ever changing environment yet also needing to remain true to their respective impulse.

...and ATS membership

The Association has also had quite a number of membership enquiries (and a few new members) over the past month, some of these received to my email address, as well as the usual bulk of emails from a variety of people in various fields and with varying interests in tarot. Having returned from a couple of weeks in Switzerland - for a work-related conference - (and other places), I still am a little behind in replying to some emails... and the older ones seem to be pushed down in my list of replies rather than in attending to them before the newest ones... I write this, though suspect that by the time this is read, I should have caught up on the back-log.

benefits

In terms of the Association, and given some of the general enquiries about membership benefits, there are really only two: discounts to our own publications and from a small number of places (including the TS Bookshop in Melbourne and TarotGarden online); and the support your membership is giving to our collective undertakings. Also, as a member you may also request to be listed in the member’s online list and also request your own page, and these may be of additional benefit. For many of us, however, it remains the support that our membership has given to being able to organise the International Conference a few years ago, the publication of Tarot Symbolism and the Story of the Waite-Smith Tarot, and the casting of the bronze International Tarot Award, as well as, of course, our websites and Newsletter, each of which has only been made possible by individual contributions and ongoing membership.

Incidentally, issue 3 of Taros is in the pipeline... so more news about that very soon...

Courses and Dissertation page

Thankyou to those who pointed out a couple of omissions from our new Dissertation and University courses page. I’m sure that others have yet to be included! If anyone has access to abstracts for the two dissertations for which this is still missing, I would welcome a copy.

Until next month!

Frank Jensen The Story of the Waite-Smith Tarot Deck

The Story of the Waite-Smith Tarot

by K. Frank Jensen

Frank Jensen has long been amongst the key players in presenting information on the development of this important deck in the history of Tarot. During the second half of the 20th century, sales of this deck surpassed all others.

We now have the opportunity to read on this deck's history during its key phases during the past 100 years.

Whether a enthusiast for this deck or not, this will become a classic in manuscripts that focus openly on important developments. A welcome addition that the Association for Tarot Studies is proud to be able to present.

Tarot History

Without a sense of tarot's history, many claims are inaccurately repeated. One of the best sources for an overview of tarot's history is Tarotpedia's entry. Even its entry, however, is dependant on the research of numerous others.
